As a business owner who’s marketing a business, it’s understandable that you want to make the most of the available platforms. However, this usually ends up being the different social media platforms, simply because they’re easy to get set up. But if you’re looking for a better return on your time, don’t underestimate the power and efficiency of email marketing.
Social media is primarily a social platform
Regardless of whether you use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or TikTok, these social media sites are all designed to help you connect with your friends and family. It’s why Facebook encourage business pages and frown on you using your personal profile for business purposes. (BTW, you run the risk of getting your account shut down, if you do this!).
Businesses jumped on the sales and marketing possibilities these platforms opened up for them. Yet when the different platforms implemented paid marketing options and reduced reach etc., many were outraged.
Social media marketing is fickle
And that’s why so many of these social sites are seen as a ‘pay to play’ platform. If you want to use them for marketing purposes, you need to pay for the privilege. Social media marketing is fickle! Fans can like your page but not get shown your content, and algorithms can play havoc with your engagement, whilst ad accounts can be disabled with no warning.
Let’s face it, Facebook is so unpredictable at the moment, and many people are losing their Facebook and Instagram accounts. But that’s the cost of using them as your primary marketing platforms. You run the risk of losing everything because you don’t own the land you’re building your marketing campaigns on.
Email marketing is built on your own land
What you need is a solid marketing strategy that is secure and replicable. And you can only achieve that if you use tools that are stable, consistent and totally within your control. That’s why email marketing has to be your top priority – you’re using your own land to build it on.
Using email marketing to grow a list of engaged fans is a must and it’s quite easy to set up. Check out this blog on how to easily set up your landing page to capture email addresses to get started and don’t let tech fear and overwhelm get in the way of growing a list.
Not only can you guarantee that your emails will be delivered, but you can also see who is opening and clicking on them. You can track what is and isn’t working, adapt your marketing strategy as needed, and ultimately close more sales.
When it comes to marketing your business, only you can really decide on what works best for you. But if you’re using social media instead of email marketing, I’d strongly recommend you take the above points into consideration and adapt your marketing plans to suit. A better strategy would be to use social media to initially engage with your ideal clients, before driving that traffic over to your website and mailing list.
