Website SEO is something all online business owners need to get to grips with, if they want to improve their website rankings. But it’s also something that baffles them too – which is why so many are looking for SEO tips that will help. They understand why SEO is needed, but don’t quite know how to implement it.

So regardless of whether you’re just launching your website or have an established one, to help make website SEO a little easier for you, here are 15 basic SEO tips that will help improve your site. And as a bonus, they’re tips you can easily implement on your website today!

#1: Tidy up your navigation

Check out your navigation bar. Do they have a simple and logical flow to them? Do you need to remove or add anything to your navigation menus, to make it easier for website visitors to find what they need?

#2: Set up Google Analytics

As far as SEO tips go, if you want to see how people are using your site, you need to set up Google Analytics. This will show you the keywords they use to get to your site, the pages they land on and what blog posts are popular. If you already have it set up – why not head over to Google and check out your latest stats!

#3: An SEO tip for your blogs: Use tags and categories

Keeping your blog posts marked as ‘uncategorised’ isn’t doing you any good, in terms of website SEO. So ensure all blog posts have categories and tags assigned to them.

#4: Start linking internally for SEO good practice

Internal links help search engines see how your content relates and interacts with each other. The more linked it is, the better the impact it will have on your SEO. So go back through your old blog posts and start connecting them together. See where you can link from one page to another (such as adding a ‘contact page’ link to your ‘about’ page, or linking across to your main blog feed page).

#5: Think about outward-bound links

It also helps your SEO if you link out to other websites. A good way to do this is to add one or two outward-bound links in your blog posts. You can also create a ‘recommended resources’ page and link out to those products and services you’re an affiliate of.

#6: Long Term SEO tip: Start working on backlinks

Backlinks can help your SEO too. Although this is more of a long term strategy, if you’ve already written guest blog posts or been a podcast guest, you can check if they link back to your site. Another option is to write a testimonial for something you recommend and again, link that back to your site.

#7: Add alt attributes to your images

All websites have images on them, so check the SEO on yours. Check your images all use SEO-friendly titles (such as the blog post name, if they’re within a blog post) and add a logical description within the ‘alt-text’ section.

#8: Image SEO tip: Run all images through a compressor

Site loading speed can impact on your SEO, so make sure you’re using the right sized images on your site. You can also run all images through a compression site – such as TinyPNG – to reduce the file size of each image.

#9: Make use of headers

Headers not only help break up the text on a page or blog post, but they also help with your SEO. On blog posts the post title is usually a H1 header – so use H2 and H3 headers to help break up your text. When you’re creating a sales page though, you can follow the same premise – and set the main header text as your H1, before using H2 and H3 headers to again, break up the text on your page.

Not sure what H1, H2 and H3 headers are? Think of it as the size of text – H1 is the biggest, H2 is slightly smaller, and H3 is smaller again.

#10: Make sure your site has an active SSL certificate

This is usually something your hosting provider or website provider provides – and it helps show that your site is both safe and secure. If you need to install an SSL certificate yourself, check out Let’s Encrypt.

#11: Easy SEO: Install an SEO plugin

If you want something to help make SEO implementation easy on a WordPress site, check out SEO Yoast. It helps you with creating SEO-friendly meta titles and descriptions, as well as checking if your content is easily readable and using the right amount of keywords. (For Kajabi sites, make sure you’re using the inbuilt SEO elements on all of your pages and blogs!).

#12: Sort your broken links

Broken links negatively impact on both user experience and SEO. You can easily rectify this by installing the Broken Link Checker on your WordPress website or using a free online broken link checker.

#13: Add social icons to your site

If you haven’t already got social icons on your site, it pays to add them. Not only do they help direct visitors to your social media accounts, they’re also good for SEO.

#14: Encourage sharing

You want people to share your content – so encourage them to do so, by adding social share icons to your site. You can use AddThis or, for WordPress sites, opt for a good plugin, such as Simple Social Icons.

#15: Add more text

Finally, it’s worth remembering that long blog posts work better than short ones. It also gives you a chance to add in some keywords, to help with your SEO. So go back through your old blog posts and see if you can add updates to them or add links through to other blog posts (as crosslinking helps too!).
